I am now working almost entirely in the mediums of painting and printmaking. My work is landscape based and is mainly influenced by the rugged and sparsely populated area known as the Burren in County Clare, Ireland. My early paintings are devoid of people and reflect the loneliness and desolation of this area, which like many parts of Ireland was depopulated by famine and emigration. Growing up as I did in rural Ireland I am familiar with the legends of the ancient Celtic people and the characters from some of these tales are featured in some of my more recent paintings and prints. I was intrigued to find that specific parts of the landscape in Ireland are associated with these legends and researching this has added dimension and vigour to my artwork.
